Atmen plot
18-year-old Roman Kogler is serving a sentence in juvenile detention. He has already served half of his sentence and will be given the chance to be paroled, but his future does not look bright. He has no family and seems no match for society. After many failed attempts, he finds a job at the municipal morgue in Vienna. One day he is confronted by a dead woman who bears his family name. Although it soon becomes apparent that it is not his mother, he begins to think about his past for the first time and starts looking for his mother.

Gloomy drama about a down-on-his-luck youngster. What his setbacks entailed was more or less to be suspected, but is only somewhat clarified towards the end.
The work around the mortuary is certainly unattractive and adds to the oppression surrounding this film.
A theme that deserves attention, but it did bother me with a few things, such as the repetition of certain scenes. The examinations after each day of leave, as an example.

Atmen is my first Austrian experience. Markovics produced a sober stylistic print that radiates little positivism. The central figure is the young Roman, a juvenile delinquent, who can gradually look forward to his early release. He starts looking for a job and eventually ends up at a funeral company. The reason why he chose this is less clear to me. It does, however, provide an interesting and hard insight. The funeral care reminded me of the strong Japanese film Okuribito (2008) (recommended by the way).
The film radiates little joie de vivre and the limited relationships Roman has are hard and gloomy. No happy girl standing by his side, although that possibility was certainly there on the train. Nice and realistic, because those friendships don't grow on trees as so many films - even quality films - often make it seem . The contacts with his mother are also not very hopeful, even confrontational. Strong story, only here and there I had the feeling with a number of plot lines that there was not enough depth or elaboration. Atmen is a very static film and also has limited dialogues. It is a no nonsense film, raw and realistic. Nice!

This was not easy for me. I re-watched this movie three times and finally finished it. Could just have been an Ulrich Seidl film, but he makes better films. Yet here too an example of the 'hyperrealism', of what you could call the Austrian school. Film leaves too many holes for me. The meeting with the mother is also not very clear and adds little. I found the ending rather thin. Still, it's not a bad film, in the sense that it shows how few hopes and tools young people have in life. That doesn't make you happy.
