The further the film progressed, the less I liked it. The theatrical dialogue and a lack of battles make it a rather unappealing "sword & sandals." It does all look classy, though. Alexander is portrayed in a rather unflattering light: he is a power-hungry individual who does not hesitate to murder those closest to him to realize his ambitions.
The film is divided into two parts: the first covers the rise of Alexander, his love-hate relationship with his father Philip, and finally the unification of the Greek city-states (with the exception of Athens). The second describes Alexander's campaign as far as Persia, where he becomes embroiled in a war with Darius, and his self-glorification. I actually found the first half the best; the campaign in Persia is filmed like a joke. I do not recommend this.

This film could have been or become something, but due to the weak acting and particularly the lackluster fight scenes, it is not a classic. I know it is 70 years old, but still, there are films from that period that hold up much better than this one.
