At the time, this film was intended as Fox's ambitious response to the massive success of Selznick's “Gone with the Wind.” However, the film cannot achieve that ambition in any way. This is mainly due to the poor story about a beautiful woman of humble origins, who works her way up to become the mistress of the English king in the 17th century and in the process sees the love of her life slipping through her fingers again and again.
The duo of Linda Darnell and Cornel Wilde lack the talent, allure and charisma of GWTW's illustrious stars Clark Gable and Vivien Leigh. However, cameraman Leon Shamroy has clearly understood that the film mainly revolves around Linda Darnell. I've seen almost all of the photogenic Darnell's films from her early days, but rarely has her dazzling beauty been used as effectively as in this film. That is what makes the film more than worth seeing despite its shortcomings.
