Kon-Tiki plot

In 1947, Thor Heyerdahl wants to prove that Polynesia was populated by settlers from South America and not from Asia. For this he travels with five inexperienced crew members on a raft made of balsa wood from Peru to Polynesia. Can he complete the 5,000-mile crossing?

From Peru to Polynesia by raft led by a Norwegian who cannot swim. Just like Max Manus pregnant with a powerful story, but here too it does not result in a compelling epic. In just over half an hour, Thor Heyerdahl is introduced and his theory, ambition and preparations are reviewed. Just like the vessel and the crew a little bit of string, but as an informative basis it is sufficient. The film focuses on when the company chooses the sea.

Fortunately, it doesn't turn out to be an all too crazy adventure. Occasionally swelling music and along the way it has something that seems too scripted, but otherwise the Norwegians handle it fairly modestly. Yet in the end it has too little fat to really appeal to the imagination. Apart from Thor and a little Herman, the characters are not that much. There is some tinkering with group dynamics, etc., but most of it disappears under the ever-growing beards.

Such a sea surface quickly produces beautiful images, but only a few times do you get the impression of the immense water and how tiny the Kon-Tiki is within it. What lies beneath that surface produces more fireworks. In particular the poster scene is equally impressive and there are still some beautiful and precarious moments to be seen. detect. Interesting enough in that respect to keep it going, but nowhere do you really get the idea of being part of an epic journey.

Why does Europe continue to make those Hollywood epics that they no longer enjoy in California!? 'Kon-Tiki' (2012) holds up in terms of special effects, but the narrative is a static, predictable affair. (Level: there's going to be a shark or something. Hey, it's a shark!) Even for an adventure film, the film shows little ambition to get more out of the material than checking off standard clichés. The only unexpected twist (the divorce) is further apart from the events on the raft and feels dragged in as a contemporary touch. The formula itself would not even be a huge problem if there was chemistry between the actors. The cast consists of non-English speaking actors who communicate with each other unnaturally and implausibly. Ultimately, this is a production that tries hard to be something 'in the spirit of Hollywood' and therefore has too little individuality to really touch.

Scientists and adventurers have a blind faith in their theories and often give a lot to achieve their goal or be right. Many fail in their plan, not because they are wrong, but simply because they often pay death or - less adventurously - stop because of lack of resources or interest from the outside world.

Thor Heyerdahl is also in the latter boat. Everyone calls him crazy for his latest venture, and deep down he's pretty much on his own. If it had been up to his crew, he would have floated into Polynesia in the end, but not with just rope or wood.

A well-maintained film in which, however, little is known about the other characters besides the protagonist. At sea, the boredom is partly noticeable, but for the rest it is a fairly dull affair. They didn't really suffer from hunger and they don't get beyond the typical clichés of a storm and some insects - dangerous and harmless. Nicely filmed and the camera on board was also interesting. There's something in between for me. Fascinating, but just not exciting enough.
