Doomwatch plot
"An ecological nightmare gone berserk!"
Marine biologist Dr Shaw has been commissioned by the secret environmental organization Doomwatch to conduct research on a seriously polluted island off the coast of Cornwall. It is immediately clear that the islanders are not waiting for him. He is being watched, snubbed and put on his number. When he finally manages to find a home, he meets teacher Victoria Brown (Geeson), an attractive but unfortunately also frosty type. What does she know, who does she hang out with?

Feature-length spin-off of the English TV series that ran for three seasons (1970-1972). It had been on my to-watch list for a while; I love films set in small, tucked-away villages and islands.
Ian Bannen investigates pollution caused by a leaking tanker but finds a hostile island population and plankton three times the normal size. Then we know trouble is brewing, although this isn't really a horror film. It's about what you can expect from it; it also has something of a long TV episode about it. It's nice to watch for the enthusiast, but if you don't see it, you're not really missing much.

The mysterious atmosphere on the island is well-established and makes this film reasonably suspenseful. Doctor Shaw works for an anti-pollution agency called "Doomwatch" and is sent to an isolated island where he is welcomed, to put it mildly, roughly and unkindly. At first glance, this thriller seems to have little substance, but it then comes across strongly with a pessimistic message of ecological awareness. Remarkable, considering the film is already 50 years old. This must be one of the earliest films on this theme. The consequences of environmental pollution on humanity were already a hot topic.
