Although strictly speaking the story is "one cuts planks from thick wood"; the underlying theme (desire, individuality and loss) is certainly not; and is portrayed in an inimitable way. The main character is one you will never forget. Very special film.

I don't know to what extent the high average of this film has to do with the percentage of gays who voted for the film. Maybe some influence after all? Harvey Fierstein (not to be confused with Weinstein) is a Broadway playwright who worked to make homosexuality a topic of discussion in the 1980s, and he succeeded wonderfully with Torch Song Trilogy, because he wants to share with us what it feels like to be gay. to live life at a time when it was still socially difficult.

Here he plays Arnold Beckoff, a shouty cousin, and draws us into his emotional world. As the title indicates, the film is structured in three periods. In the first, we see a relationship between Arnold, who performs as a drag queen in a show, and Ed, a bisexual teacher. The second period is about his idyll with Alan and in the third period he confronts his mother and has an adoptive son.

Fierstein perhaps drew inspiration from his own life experiences or those of acquaintances, and that is partly why the character, the relationships, his ups and downs, feel honest and lived through. Definitely worth seeing but very overrated here. Wondering where we will be after 500 votes.
