Tristana plot

"Somewhere between the innocent girl and the not so innocent mistress is the bizarre, sensuous story of Tristana"

Toledo, Spain, 1923: Tristana, a young woman of 18, has just lost her mother and is taken in by Don Lope, an impoverished aristocrat known for his liberal ideas. Knowing next to nothing about life and the world, Tristana struggles with ambiguous feelings for her guardian, for whom she harbors both gratitude and disgust. Nevertheless, it doesn't take long before she becomes his mistress.

More subdued than most of his other 'later' films. And I was honestly ready for a less crazy Bunuel. Last seen his unofficial trilogy The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie, The Phantom of Liberty and the Milky Way and I don't know when I like him better; when he knows how to hold back or not.

Tristana is clearly the predecessor of Bitter Moon, for example. The power games between Rey and Deneuve are very integral. Wonderful to watch. Bunuel plays wonderfully with themes such as stolen innocence, jealousy (also watch his Mexican predecessor El!) and power games. Delivers many interesting scenes. I choose my favorite moment(s) for each theme. For the innocence Deneuve who always chooses a favorite (a pillar, a street) and Rey who of course thinks that is nonsense. Jealousy: keeping Deneuve at home, which of course can never go well. Power games; various moments actually. Standing naked in front of the window, the ice-cold wedding, rejecting Rey on the wedding night, not calling the doctor.

Furthermore, there are many interesting side roads in the film, such as the gossip and backbiting of Rey's so-called friends, and this is also a film about the decline of the aristocracy. Furthermore, this is also surreal to a certain extent. And then I'm not necessarily talking about the incidental dream sequence or the replaying ending, but much more about the almost surreal atmosphere and manner. If you saw the film, you will know what I mean. 4 stars for another excellent film by Bunuel.

Mediocre film about an old man who becomes guardian of a young woman when her mother dies. The shifting power relations between the two main characters is still interesting, but I probably missed a lot of the rest (for example, what was the function of the deaf-mute boy). The jumps in time were also often unclear. Just under 3.0 stars.

I've seen many of Buñuel's films over the years, but none have ever really grabbed me, and upon review, Tristana is no exception. The premise is interesting enough, the execution is solid and effective on paper, and Fernando Rey is perfect for the role, but the visual style doesn't suit me, the characters remain distant, and Deneuve doesn't really bring her role to life. It may be more my fault than Buñuel's, and I don't mean that sarcastically, but while his worldview might be mine, his film world is definitely not.
