It is a group you rarely hear from: the Turkish Alevis in the Netherlands. Yet about one third of the Turkish Dutch are Alevis. The Alevis are a liberal movement within Islam, which is therefore also called Anatolian Humanism. While the Dutch often lump them together with Sunni Muslims, they are considered apostates by the more orthodox Muslims. In her documentary 'The Faith of the Flying Birds', filmmaker Sabine König portrays the small but very active Alevi community in Deventer during the run-up to their annual religious gathering, the Cem.
