38-year-old police officer Danny lives at home with his domineering mother, while he spends time worrying about her. One evening in an Irish pub, he meets Theresa. It clicks immediately and they start a relationship. However, Danny's mother is not part of the revelry as he worries too much about her.

An enjoyable film to watch, with a good balance between drama, romance, and (sometimes a touch of dark) comedy. Also well acted by John Candy and Ally Sheedy, but above all, the aging Maureen O'Hara proves once again that she is far from having lost her acting skills. She had essentially retired as an actress in 1973, but here she makes a small comeback 18 years later, and subsequently starred in a few more films.

It is all quite sweet and nice, but the uninspired direction really ruins this little film. John Candy remains entertaining but played these kinds of roles half-asleep, and Belushi really has too little to do here. The same goes for Sheedy, by the way, who has a thankless role. It is all so 'middle of the road.' Bright spots are Candy's daydreams, but they also make it painfully clear that it could all have been a bit sharper.

A romantic comedy about a nearly 40-year-old mama's boy (John Candy) who falls in love with a shy woman (Ally Sheedy). A somewhat unusual role for Candy, who proves here with modest volume and good acting that he could also handle a film without chaotic scenes and crude comedy. Sheedy always works well with me. Besides Candy and Sheedy, there are supporting roles for Maureen O'Hara and James Belushi. In short, a nice ensemble.
Only The Lonely was written and directed by Chris Columbus, who, as he often does, delivers a delightful comedy here as well. The characters lack depth but are sketched wittily. That wit also applies to the dialogue, which often possesses a dark humor edge. The story focuses primarily on family values and has little substance. Nevertheless, the film manages to be moving at times. For although the characters are flat in themselves, they exude a certain vulnerability that resonates. That human aspect makes it easy to empathize with the ups and downs of Candy and Sheedy.
Only the Lonely entertains with fun (dark) humor, human characters, good acting, and a fine balance between drama and humor. Only the Lonely is a fun and, above all, likeable film.
