Beats Rhymes & Life: The Travels of A Tribe Called Quest plot

Documentary about one of the most important and influential rap formations in history: A Tribe Called Quest from Queens, New York. Q-Tip, Phife Dawg and DJ Ali Shaheed Muhammed created their own style that brought jazz and eclectic samples into hip-hop. Together with De La Soul, Black Sheep and the Jungle Brothers, among others, they formed the Native Tongues, who aspired to a more positive image in hip-hop. Some of their albums are still considered masterpieces in the genre.

Nice documentary about the hip hop group A Tribe Called Quest. The documentary is at its best at the beginning when the entire hip hop scene of the late 80s, early 90s passes by. The second part that mainly focuses on the problems between Q-Tip and Phife is somewhat less interesting. Directorial debut of actor Michael Rapaport who is clearly a fan.

One of the best rap groups ever; different from the crap that comes out these days with prominent figures like Drake and Lil Wayne. The documentary itself was a bit disappointing, unfortunately. There was too much babbling about things that I didn't find very important (stupid fights etc.). It was fun to see how the relationships were and through individual conversations you find out how the members think about each other. We also see Busta Rhymes and a few other guests like Mary J. Blidge. The collaboration between Q-Tip and Busta Rhymes is also briefly discussed, and that's about it, because I've already played the album 'The Abstract and the Dragon' several times. But in my opinion it could all be mapped out a bit fresher; it's not a wrap, as far as I'm concerned.

A look back at the stormy career of hip-hop greats “A Tribe Called Quest” with a title that deliberately refers to their weakest album that heralded the beginning of the end. Q-Tip and Ali Shaheed Muhammad met as toddlers and inspired by Run DMC, LL Cool J and DJs Mr. Magic and Red Alert from New York radio station KISS-FM, they made their album debut with school friends Phife Dawg and Jarobi White in 1990 with “People's Instinctive Travels and the Paths of Rhythm” with the classics “Can I Kick It?”, “I Left My Wallet in el Segundo” and “Bonita Applebum”. Bitterness between Q-Tip and Phife Dawg in particular led to the bitter end ten years later. The story of a group of young people with a dream, but through the honesty of the band members and the showing of painful confrontations behind the scenes, it also provides insight into why it is so difficult to stay together. And Rapaport makes it clear why “A Tribe Called Quest” holds such a prominent place in hip-hop history.
