What are you talking about?! This is simply a Rosi grand cru, with a star role for Belushi. Never knew that guy could fucking act! I expected some kind of kitschy cash-in, simple genre work with bad dubbing, a post-poliziotteschi pseudo-la piovra blunder, but I was presented with an intelligent, witty print. Rosi has once again succeeded in incorporating his areas of interest (corruption, the failure of the system, metropolitan paranoia) in an interesting way in this international production. The whole theme that blood is thicker than water - you can't take Palermo ragazzo out of ragazzo - I really liked it. Most remarkable, however, is that Rosi has made a film that is in-depth about the two different locations, namely New York and Palermo. From the first minutes he demonstrates a thorough anthropological understanding of the city of New York - something that was usually sorely lacking among his Italian confreres. When the intrigue moves to Sicily, Rosi really pulls out all the stops. We see a splendor of ancient ruins, a city in decline, abandoned castles of the ruined nobility, lively market squares, freshly served octopus. It really resembles an erudite guided visit in nice company, Mia Doornaert or something. We also get to see the castle from Il Gattopardo. The fact that Rosi also has old chaps Noiret and Gassman appear in two eccentric supporting roles (respectively the director of the 'Grand Hotel' and a certain 'principle') fully confirms the feeling of a twist of fate. How many hidden gems does this twilight zone of cinema still contain? If this is purgatory, I'd be happy to stay here for a few more centuries.
