"One week. No rules."
Rick (Owen Wilson) and Fred (Jason Sudeikis) are best friends and both long-married. When they start to feel restless, their wives give them a "hall pass", which means they can do whatever they want for a week without being asked any questions. At first it seems like a dream come true, but they soon find out that their expectations about the single life are not in line with reality.

If you watch a film by the Farrelly brothers, you know what to expect: an hour and a half of underpants fun. In my opinion, with Dumb and Dumber and There's Something about Mary, they made two of the best contributions in that genre. They are also known for never being able to match the level of such films after Me, Myself & Irene. I agree with that, although I certainly don't think it's dramatic. Shallow Hal and The Heartbreak Kid were nice snacks imo. This Hall Pass can also count on that.
No, the brothers here do not reach the level of their work from the 90s. The film needs to get going, the humor is a bit more brave and there is also a bit of (unnecessary) drama in it, making it a fairly standard comedy. Still, the film contains some nice misunderstandings and I was able to laugh several times, which is actually quite rare. Even during the climax, the pace is still surprisingly good. Owen Wilson is suitable for a film like this one and Jason Sudeikis didn't get on my nerves, if at all. That's a lot. I might have expected more from Christina Applegate's supporting role, but Wilson's crass friends and Richard Jenkins make up for it.
You have to appreciate plain humor to enjoy it, but if you're in the mood for it, Hall Pass won't blow your mind.

Entertaining.
A bit against expectations in a reasonable windfall, this Hall Pass. Both Owen Wilson and Jason Sudeikis, I'm not a big fan of either, have their moments. And while it's all pretty flat and easy in terms of humor, the film is never irritating. The pace is good and fortunately they don't get stuck in trivial drama for too long.

The Farrellies.
As comedy makers I never thought they were brilliant, but apparently they had enough fodder and petrol to fire off comedies in succession that can earn a certain amount of appreciation from the audience. It wasn't until 2019 that a somewhat different direction seemed to emerge within their work, but before that, Hall Pass was released in 2011.
Hall Pass explores the concept of trust and how much you can trust your partner. However, anyone who thinks that a clever game will come out of this has clearly not met the Farrelly brothers, because this film is mainly rude entertainment and does not go much further than that. Of course thickened with some romantic touches, but hardly enough to make it really unique as a result.
The unfortunate thing is that both Wilson and Sudeikis never manage to form nice figures. I also prefer to see them both in more serious work I must say, but in the end they mainly have careers in the comedy industry. Both gentlemen make a somewhat dull impression in this film, while the environment around them can still be called nice. It's not that they act badly, it's just that as characters they aren't very comedic.
The tempo is quite high and enough situations are created not to make the film itself boring. That's where the compliments pretty much stop for now. It remains a level where you can do little with, but especially fun if you can also laugh with it. That is not the case with Hall Pass. It is especially fun entertainment on a dull day, but no more than that.
