Martial arts became more and more popular in the 1930s, which is why more and more people want to learn them through professional fighters in southern China. The threat has always been there, albeit latent. Threat? Yes, the threat that Wong Kar-Wai would at long last no longer tell stories, but at most express atmospheres. His best work ('In the mood for love'! '2046'!) went a bit in that direction, but in 'The Grandmaster'[/i ] the time has finally come: the director dismantles his storytelling in favor of a video clip-like aesthetic.
Beautiful? Well, more than decent. Atmospheric? strong! Story-wise? Not sufficiently clear – and I am not talking about the simple plot itself, but about the cultural-historical context, the historical background against which this biography of both an individual and of a discipline on the border between sport, art and meditation is set. And about the psychology of the characters, which seems profound but is actually superficial – after all, what do you learn about the characters?
All this is not only frustrating, in fact it affects all dimensions of the film. Beauty for the sake of beauty eventually smells of kitsch, and sweet music without the necessary emotional framework for sentiment. Look, if you were to make a caricature of Wong Kar-Wai, it could be [i]'The Grandmaster'. Isn't that, well, embarrassing?

Watched it again and definitely don't regret it. The comparison with Ip Man is easily made, of course, it is about the same legendary man. While that movie (and sequels) mostly focuses on his life and makes it one of the better biopics (including the compelling fights), The Grandmaster tries to capture the essence of his art. What is less discussed in terms of story is once again made up for with beautiful images and delightful choreographies. A poetic film showing the core of martial arts. It's more than beating each other until one remains. The grandmaster remains a masterpiece.

The choreography of the fight scenes is impressive, the execution is flawless and the fights are beautifully edited. Unfortunately, what passes for a story is slow, often heavy-handed (including moody strings) and often downright boring. It concerns an aspiring Grandmaster [Tony Leung] who must prove that he is a Grandmaster and therefore comes face to face with masters of various martial arts. This creates a romance with Gong Er [Ziyi Zhang], but it is worked out completely uninterestingly. A great movie to doze off regularly, if you feel like it.
