Het Varken van Madonna plot

Trade representative Tony (Kevin Janssens) is on a sales mission in the Belgian Westhoek. He wants to sell his metal gigolo pig Porki, but gets stuck in the unsightly hamlet of Madonna, once the battleground of the First World War. The beautiful village teacher Maria (Wine Dierickx) is concerned about the fate of her almost extinct village. Tony worries about his relationship going wrong. He wants to leave. She wants to stay. Madonna's pig will help them all.

Tension and humorless.

Perhaps some charm in the fantasy, but it is not enough to leave a good impression of this film.

Characters that are too unreal and caricatural despite the picturesque, sometimes forced West Flemish.

I will rarely skip a Flemish film. Not Madonna's pig either, but maybe I should have done this better. I already saw 200 films in 2017, but this one really takes the cake. A very disappointing film with a very absurd story. While Flemish actors can somewhat straighten out bad stories with their acting performances, I even had to search here for good fun interpretations. And it's strange to say, only Kevin Janssens (who I don't think so highly of otherwise), did the best of all. Van Eeghem also comes pretty close. Wim Opbrouck disappointed me. Here too Focketyn (and also in other contemporary fiction) no longer achieves his level as in Vaneigens, In de gloria or Het Eiland.

The rest of the cast irritated me immensely in the badly acting West Flemish. The cast was mostly a colorful collection of caricatures. The village council was thus plucked away from some bad play and the accumulated emotions were portrayed too theatrically. The film as a whole is forced and totally unbelievable (even within its context).

Few funny moments too, although I still liked the empty pig farm. Also the stunned faces when Tony came in with his mechanical pig in the cafe was nice. I seriously thought that ghost soldier was pulled by the hair. And of course Tony stumbled upon the remains of it, how could it be otherwise. The ending itself is distinctly in line with the film: light and not too serious. Perhaps I should have started the film from that point of view, but even then the film as a whole remains insufficient. There is much better on the Flemish market...

To keep his job, salesman Tony Roozen must sell as many Porkis (a robotic pig that emits a scent that stimulates the mating urges of pigs) in a region determined by lottery. Tony draws a region where there are a lot of pig farms, but when he ends up in the hamlet of Madonna, it turns out that the people there have other things on their mind. In addition, Tony's van ends up in the ditch after a near collision with a soldier in WWI uniform and the cell phone network there turns out to be down. Absurd, but highly original and highly entertaining comedy is a little incoherent, but always entertaining and has a satisfying ending.
