Hjem til Jul plot

In a small Norwegian village, several people are on their way home the night before Christmas. A divorced man dresses up as Santa Claus to see his children and his ex-wife on Christmas Eve. A woman hopes desperately but in vain that her lover will finally leave his wife after Christmas and a Protestant boy tells his Muslim classmate that his family, like her family, does not celebrate Christmas so that he can spend the evening with her. Based on the short story collection Only Soft Presents under the Tree by Levi Henriksen.

It’s not the time of year, but so what. It’s probably been 10 years since I last saw a Bent Hamer film, and even though there were only two, they were quite to my liking, just like this "Home for Christmas," by the way, which serves up a number of stories that focus much more on the characters' personal experiences than on Christmas itself.

A bit of drama, a bit of comedy, neatly mixed together, yet where a heartwarming feeling prevails over the bitterness that is also present.

Hamer remains true to his style with absurd humor. Not exuberant humor, but one you experience drop by drop (the actions of the man who was evicted), alongside tender melancholy, youthful romance, hopeful situations, and banal but painful family issues.

Pleasant and smooth video.

A Christmas movie with a series of interwoven storylines. I do like that format, although it often means you really have to concentrate to keep following the film. However, that isn't too bad with this film. The characters are easy to distinguish and the stories are easy to follow. Moreover, they are actually all captivating stories in their own right. The acting is good and it flows nicely. But I think it is also a film that I will forget quickly. The film isn't exactly groundbreaking, either. But at least it is something different from the usual cliché Christmas movie.
