Sanctum plot

"The only way out is down."

A team of divers is on an expedition to the largest, most beautiful and least accessible caves on Earth. A tropical storm forces them to go deeper into the caves. Experienced diver Frank McGuire has spent months exploring the Esa-ala Caves in the South Pacific. But when his unknown escape route is blocked by a tidal wave, Frank's team, including his 17-year-old son Josh and financier Carl Hurley, are forced to radically change their plan. With dwindling supplies, they must navigate an underwater maze to find a way out.

Pretty okay.

Now I'm all for the underwater/adventure movies. Sphere, but certainly also The Abyss have an advantage for me because of the setting. This movie also starts off well. Beautiful setting, adventurous set-up and quite nicely portrayed.

The first hour is just fun. It all goes wrong, everyone is stuck in the cave and then there is only one thing left, to find an exit. That all goes well for a while, as long as the cast has to fight against the cave, but when more and more people drop out and the characters start turning against each other, the film collapses. Rhys Wakefield is a very limited (actually just bad) actor and Gruffudd also falls through the basket.

Too bad, it would have been nicer if the film had just stuck with the nature obstacles. Towards the end it gets too corny, the film also loses some of its visual charm (or you get used to it, because 110 minutes is quite long for a film like this) and the soundtrack starts to disappoint.

A strong start and great location, however, keep things going. But there was clearly more to this.

3.0*

What a bad movie this was... Completely tired, but certainly not worth repeating...

Rarely seen such a monstrosity...

A pretty boring story and very poor acting. Someone drowns and the others say:
"Oh man...fuck!"
"Uh-huh!"

Most of the actors are also annoying, especially that nagging and crying son. One-dimensional characters as you normally only see in B-movies. Unbelievable that the name James Cameron is connected with this. The bombastic music is supposed to evoke emotions in the viewer, but one succeeds much better with silence and the sound of nature (here the water) and the breathing of humans in an emergency. Less is more! Some of the underground statues are impressive, but you get very little time to enjoy them.
