Homer Smith, a currently unemployed construction worker, heads west when his car breaks down on the way. In the middle of the desert, he goes in search of water when he is lucky enough to come across a farm. Catholic nuns work here, under the direction of Sister Maria. They believe that Smith was the chosen one to come here and help them build a church.
