More of a collection of loose sketches than it really has a noteworthy head and tail. But it's fun to watch comedic female talent for a full runtime. Kristen Wiig leads the way as the manic, jealous "best friend" who will do anything to stay number one with her childhood friend. She is particularly funny by only playing silly pranks. During the plane scene and her attempt to win Rhodes back, I rolled off the couch laughing. With her non-verbal facial expression and slapstick she knows how to convey a pleasant self-mockery. Rose Byrne is a fine antagonist as the over-organized bimbo who is more perfect than perfect. Also great supporting roles from Ellie Kemper, Melissa McCarthy, Chris O'Dowd, Jill Clayburgh and Jon Hamm. Enjoying from start to finish, even if it is a predictable little thing, the outcome of which can be guessed pretty quickly.

As a woman, I couldn't identify with anything. Of course that doesn't mean I'm already writing the film off, but in my eyes it was a No go. Long-winded, awkward, exaggerated, squeezed humor and so on. I was irritated by that bitch Annie, what an arrogant figure that was. You see the film from one perspective and that is Annie's. They were all smart characters who gave the film a ridiculous framework. Reminded me more of a puppet show. It wasn't even a glimpse. Waste of time, a 2 hour movie! I should have stopped it sooner but once settled into the couch I left it as background noise.

Less sharp than expected.

Not that I really like The Hangover that much, but as a female equivalent of that film (a widely read predicate) I expected a rougher edge here. In The Hangover I could sympathize with how genuinely enthused the main characters were; here all humor that should exceed the average rom-com content in good manners remains a bit cosmetically glued on.

A screaming diarrhea session, a bland drunken talk and many, many jokes that are unnecessarily stretched out, so that any sharpness is actually already milked out per scene. Take the speech scene at the engagement party, the two aforementioned scenes, but also if Rhodes' attention needs to be drawn later: in principle jokes with good potential but through repetition, each burst of laughter is provided with its own fade-out.

Wiig and also the insufferable Byrne do very well and a handful of supporting roles can hardly be blamed. There is enough chemistry in the group and also in terms of timing you would expect that the humor would just work more. It's really the script (written by two women) that leaves the jokes on repeat for too long and the direction (by a man, too bad) that should have given the tempo a little more priority. In essence a film with a good heart, but a recently seen Pitch Perfect, I found a better lance for female humor. 2*
