“I do not entertain hypotheticals. The world itself is vexing enough.”

Delicious. You have to see this film just for the brilliant debut of Hailee Steinfeld, and then you also get a grumpy Jeff Bridges, Matt Damon with a bad mustache, and the wonderful western atmosphere. Steinfeld is fantastic as 14-year-old Mattie. Rap of the tongue, quirky, precocious, smart, etc. Steinfeld does not let himself be messed with and holds his own in the rough Western atmosphere.

And the dialogues of the Coen Brothers fit her like a glove (just like the other actors). They have often shown that Bridges, Damon, Brolin and Pepper are fantastic actors. True Grit doesn't really feel like a Coen movie, but there is sometimes that absurd humor and the somewhat sour ending is also really Coens. Revenge and retribution comes with a price.

The Coen Brothers and I; it is not always a successful combination. They've done enough good stuff, but I think their dry humor and ironic storytelling work much better in their crime-like films. In True Grit I don't find the humor, anachronisms, and the ironic/often not taking itself seriously tone really appropriate, or even seems to be there to obscure an otherwise empty whole. I thought most of Buster Scruggs, another Coens western, suffered from that as well. No, then give me the absurd Fargo or the cynically dark No Country for Old Men.

Some scenes are successful and roughly the entire last fifteen minutes was still fun. Plus, there's nothing bad to say about the actors. Jeff Bridges puts down a nice character and Hailee Steinfeld does that well too, although her role is difficult to take seriously. Only Matt Damon is so boring again, think that's only a limited actor.

2.5*
