Shivers ran through my body after seeing this sublime documentary. World-famous drug lord Pablo Escobar and Andrés Escobar (no relation), the Colombian footballer who was murdered for an own goal at the 1994 World Cup, together paint a picture of Columbia from the 1970s that moves and bewilders.

In a grand way, directors Jeff Zimbalist and Michael Zimbalist show how the two Escobars indirectly touch and influence each other and what enormous impact they have had, each in different ways, on the country of Colombia.

The drug war and the rise of Colombian football make a big impression, but it is above all the authentic images and the contribution of virtually all the key players of the time that make The Two Escobars the best documentary I have ever seen.

One of the best documentaries I've ever seen. Not only is my love for football great, but the international underworld also fascinates me immensely. So this was a bull's eye, a perfect combination of interesting interviews, smooth editing and a lot of archive footage.

I actually only knew both Escobars by name, but I knew a little who they were and how they met their end. However, the Zimbalists know how to bring the oppressive atmosphere in Colombia to your screen in a stunning way, leaving no details unexposed. It's also great that both storylines are told in an equally interesting way. Such Pablo is of course a dangerous criminal, but I still regularly had respect when he once again built a football field or even an entire residential area and the population praised him. However, this changed when he once again killed a handful of opponents.

Pablo's death is not that fascinating, a bit of a 'rise and fall' story. Andrés's is of course much more remarkable and extremely sad. It is also a huge shame that the entire Colombian football was destroyed as a result. Although I have no doubt that Colombia now has a fantastic team that can achieve great results. Gripping and beautiful documentary that every football fan must see.

Initially I wasn't too impressed with the low budget production quality and the parallel stories of the two Escobars. But gradually, as it becomes clear that their worlds are becoming more and more integrated, you become more and more carried away and the documentary achieves a result that transcends the stories about drugs and football and is quite moving. Special.
