Beautiful editing in this film, where a touch of expressionism still resonates, alongside the neo-realism, of course. In terms of character development, I found Ossessione a bit weaker; Giovanna, in particular, is a whiny character who doesn't mesh well with Gino at all, so as a viewer, you feel little connection to their relationship. The last half hour is also rather chaotic (where did that kid suddenly come from at the pump? What was the role of that dancer/prostitute?). Still, as a debut, a more than decent film.

Visconti in his neo-realist period.
A melodrama with an emphasis on the familiar theme of failure, here of an overly ambitious couple.
The film opens strongly, followed by some weaker moments (after the "accident"), and although the transitions between successive scenes weren't always smooth, Visconti nevertheless proves to be a master, delivering beautiful images that have little or nothing to do with the story, but cleverly contribute to the atmosphere.
A film with the yearning for freedom and independence as its central theme. Bonding is possible, but not at all costs. This idea is clear in the characterization of the two leads, but also surfaces in that other carnival performer, lo spagnolo.
After "The Postman Always Rings Twice" with Jack Nicholson, I definitely enjoyed this much older Visconti version.

I have little to criticize about the film's content. Well-told, captivating story. But somehow, the film simply didn't really grab me. Perhaps a bit too old, the acting a bit too stiff. I think the image quality also plays a part in that; it wasn't very good. I watched it with a rather detached view, and as a result, the film didn't really captivate me. 3.0*
