Absentia plot

"There are fates worse than death."

Tricia's husband, Daniel, has been missing for over 7 years. Even though she is currently heavily pregnant, her life is more than ever a mess. A man or active relationship is not immediately there in her life. Bills and other papers pile up and cause her a lot of headaches. Her younger sister Callie tries to reach out to Tricia and help her sister get some stability in her life. Something she can certainly use because unfortunately she has a past as a junkie. Callie's help comes just at the right time. From time to time Tricia is overcome with panic attacks and hallucinations.

Subdued low-budget horror film that relies mainly on suggestion. It may be clear that the makers master this game well and leave a large part of the horrors to the imagination of the viewer. It does lift a corner of the veil, but (fortunately) that's it. The shots of and in the tunnel are of crucial importance in this: dark and ominous. But the interpretations (especially of both sisters) are more than decent. If you are also presented with an original premise, you have nothing to complain about as a horror fan. They should make more movies like this!

Everyone is talking about atmosphere here? I think this is completely missing because I was not carried away, so the film was long-winded for almost the entire first hour. Then some interesting stories from the archives of the history of the disappearance surface. It's about the most captivating thing the film manages to present. Yet the whole remains very vague and although I can usually live with that, I find it too vague here. You don't have to explain everything but people who disappear in a wall I can't do anything with that.

In the meantime I can say that I am a Flanagan fan because for this film he scored 3.38* based on 4 films. Oculus seen (I think even 2x), but here he misses the ball a bit. While it may be his most original movie, I think it's his worst. The two actresses are just quite annoying and it takes too long for something to finally happen. This is by no means horror. Drama is, but it's actually not at all sentimental - but that wouldn't have been possible either, because you have nothing to do with the characters. Just like the viewer, you are left stunned, just like that police officer with his shiny marble.

A film with a good tension build-up and a nice dark atmosphere, partly due to the excellent soundtrack and of course the scary and mysterious tunnel. That's what the film had to rely on for me, but what it could all mean; I would not know. Maybe that's not what the director was looking for at all. As if to say; you can fill that in yourself.

Until now I had only seen the film "Oculus" by this director, of which I unfortunately can't remember much. I didn't even post about that movie. Stupid afterwards. Flanagan's movie "Hush" is on my watch list for next time. Hopefully it's a little less mysterious so that I don't have to ask myself why questions afterwards like now with "Absentia". Bite-sized chunks don't have to be served to me, but there are limits. so don't make it too difficult.

3.0*
