Colorful refers to the main character's conclusion. People all have beautiful light colors but also gloomy dark colors. Life is like a palette of paint. You determine the colors on your canvas yourself.

A soul is given the opportunity to return to Earth in the body of a boy, Makoto, who recently committed suicide. The soul takes possession of the body and gradually learns a lot about the previous owner. A soul guide assists him every now and then and challenges him to undertake and discover things.

The film is beautifully animated. The backgrounds are sometimes clearly edited photos. Personally, this is not my preference, but it hasn't really bothered me. The story is told slowly, but that also bothers me. Some humor has been incorporated into the film as the story itself is quite heavy due to the subject.

The ending may be a bit sappy, but it does not miss the film.

All in all a very nice movie.

3.5*

Another strong Japanese animated film. It is a mystical film about ghosts, life and death. About reincarnation, the search for yourself and seizing second chances. A film also about forgiveness. So many themes are woven into the story, where in the opening scene you have to deal with a spirit that takes possession of the body of teenage Makoto. This boy has just committed suicide and the ghost is absorbing the experiences of his new guest. The ghost slowly gets to know Makoto and finds out why he committed suicide. What follows is a moving search for the how and why.

Not a film that is reserved for young viewers, although nothing gruesome happens. But the theme is already complex and weighty enough for small(er) children to understand it. Life is what you make of it is the underlying moral, using the metaphor of the paint palette. The ending turns out to be a small (perhaps an obvious one) twist, but that doesn't make the film any less intense. Nice animation, that's for sure!

A wandering soul takes up residence in the body of teenager Makoto Kobayashi [Kazato Tomizawa] who has attempted suicide. To do this, he must discover who Makoto is and why he took his desperate act. He gets help from Pura Pura [Michael]. Miho Maruo adapted the novel of the same name by Eto Mori, which cleverly examines suicide among teenagers, without false sentiment and melancholy. Combination of mystery and psychological drama with beautifully drawn sets and a hopeful, compelling denouement. Also available in an English spoken version.
