Shanghai, a rapidly changing metropolis, a port city where people come and go. Shanghai has had many different inhabitants; revolutionaries, capitalists, politicians, soldiers, artists and gangsters. Shanghai is also the setting for revolutions, liquidations and love stories. After the victory of the Chinese communists in 1949, thousands of residents moved to Taiwan or Hong Kong. Leaving Shanghai meant being away from home for thirty years. But staying meant suffering from the Cultural Revolution and China's other political disasters.
