A Murder of Crows plot

"A work of deadly fiction."

After Lawson Russell is banned from being a lawyer, he goes somewhere to write a book, but it's not as easy as he thought. Then he meets an old man who does have a manuscript and he is allowed to read it. To his surprise it is very good, he also wants to write something like that. The old man dies and he pretends it's his manuscript. It becomes a best seller. Then it turns out that the murders described in the book actually happened and he is arrested. He will now have to prove himself innocent by finding the real killer.

See-through thriller.

Eea is saved from destruction by Gooding, but it never becomes a real party. Still, this entertaining, but rather predictable flick offers some respite.

Reasonable.

A decent film, but just not enough.

As Gauke mentioned earlier, I also think that the voice-over was quite disturbing. This is not good for the tension. This is undoubtedly a missed opportunity, because they could have done more with this. The script is fairly well put together. The relatively unknown film Fox (2009) was inspired by this story. The plot holes also make it less attractive to watch. This is in contrast to Ashley Laurence. Despite the fact that Cuba Gooding Jr. does his best, his role could have been played better by someone else.

2.5 *

The stick-up was such a fun movie that I've made it a point to see more of this director's films, but none of the four have actually come close. A murder of crows has two serious drawbacks : although he tries his best, Cuba Gooding Jr is definitely not suitable for the lead role in this noir-esque film, and the make-up of the old man that Gooding's renting boat is so horribly bad that I absolutely can't seem to suspend my disbelief - I just can't imagine Gooding's character really thinks a senior citizen looks like this instead of immediately asking which fake store he bought that mask from (presumably the same one where detective Goethe's fake mustache comes from). Not to mention the aforementioned improbability that Gooding can walk through New Orleans for half the movie while his snout is on the news...
Anyway, on the plus side are the good music, the chase filmed with reasonable speed, Tom Berenger's not bad acting (at least as soon as he has taken off his Jamaican holiday clothes) and the beautiful photography (although the trailer on my HOM Vision DVD is curiously a better picture quality than the film itself). Besides, there are two twists at the end that I didn't see coming : I could have sworn it was Eric Stoltz disguised as the old man, and Berenger's death I didn't see coming. As a result, the film just barely gets a pass, but in the end it unfortunately does not rise above the level of an ambitious B-movie.
