The director probably wanted to make an intelligent Cronenberg-esque film, but the result is mainly a somewhat confused horror film that doesn't quite come into its own.

At times the good intentions still shine through and that scene with the worm is dirty, but otherwise it all just muddles along until the denouement, which is still quite nice.

Also watched this one and it was not bad, but also not that special. Another nice story about twins although it sometimes seems a bit confusing.

Fortunately, the cast didn't do badly.

It's certainly not a must-see, but it's nice to have seen it once.

Solid and straightforward. At the center are identical twins with a special gift. Two callous teenage boys who increase the death toll in an American town. Director Antonio Negret makes a film without excessive outbursts of violence but makes a film that passes by calmly and without much emotional fuss. The film creates a nihilistic, depressing and mysterious atmosphere with its two emotionless protagonists and thrives on that.

The acting is good. The characters are intriguing. The characters are not flat caricatures but are reasonably versatile. The film has a good build-up of tension that is well fed with well-placed shock moments and a number of dream sequences. Also well done is the sober sketch of life at an American high school. Perhaps not too subtle and a bit superficial, but the microcosm that is the school is convincingly portrayed.

However, I was not very impressed by the film as a whole. The story hardly has any surprises and is especially in the middle part very flat and sometimes even a bit boring. The well-built tension suffers from it. Acting, atmosphere and setting are ok. Seconds Apart is nothing more than a nice work but certainly not a film that you absolutely have to have seen.
