"Three brothers. One destiny. Freedom at all costs."
The film follows the lives of three Algerian brothers between 1945 and 1962. They were driven from their country with their families and survived the Sétif massacre in 1945. They find each other again in France and two of them fight for the independence of Algeria, with no understanding of the third brother. The battle of Paris, which pits the FLN (Algerian independence movement) against the French police, will cause friction and division between the three brothers. A piece of history that also mentions the war in Indochina and the events of October 17, 1961. That day, a demonstration against the compulsory curfew for Algerian workers was brutally suppressed by the police.

A gloomy family drama about three brothers as a framework for the Algerian resistance against French rule after the Second World War. The film leaves a chaotic impression due to the lack of depth. It is too much of a messy story about the ever-escalating violence that claimed hundreds of thousands of victims among the police on the one hand and the Algerians on the other in the 1950s and 60s.
A missed opportunity, years later, to provide more clarity about an inky black page in French and Algerian history.

Solid film about the Algerian struggle against the French occupier during the colonial era. Not entirely complete nor accurate. At times a very one-sided film, but once you get to the bottom of it, on a cinematographic level it is a good film with a good atmospheric setting and excellent editing. Against the background of this battle, the story of three brothers is highlighted.
Hors-la-loi is a crime film set against a historical context. I could hardly identify with the brothers and certainly could not sympathize with them. The plot and fate of the story did little for me. Pretty unsubtle and messy. Technically everything was well done.

Great film that starts off very strong. Afterwards we may see too many images in timetables, but because mainly the main characters remain in the picture, this can still be followed. Speaking of images, this film that has an ugly English name on the cover of my Blu-ray (Outside the Law) looks sublime. That applies to the entire ride by the way. They also paid a lot of attention to details, so that everything tastes good. I read somewhere above some kind of Hollywood sauce. I had to laugh, because not a word of English is spoken here. French is the main language and here and there we hear "Arabic". The glitz and glamor is there, by the way. This is mainly due to the "crook" Said. But that also makes the film enjoyable. Hors la loi sometimes resembles a gangster film. The pace is good by the way. There are never any boring moments and the only breaks are mainly with the brothers' mother. Maybe there could have been a little more room in there. Anyway, I had a great time with this drama. The film is mainly made from an Algerian point of view. Terribly? I don't think so, even though not everything would have gone that way, but that is often the case with based on true story, even though it is not stated now.
The film also has a 26-minute extra, but unfortunately it is not subtitled in Dutch. And my French is minimal. Petite!
