Frankie O'Malley and Jefferson Smith are unemployed and looking for work. In the 'Employees Wanted' section of a newspaper, both see a job offer at the Overland Transport Company, a company run by 'Pop' Wallace. Unbeknownst to Frankie and Jefferson, a fierce competition between the trucking companies has already left two of Pop's drivers killed and their trucks destroyed. Frankie and Jefferson are hired by the garage mechanic 'Chick' Daly and by Patsy Wallace, the daughter of 'Pop'. On their first ride, with Frankie as the driver and Jefferson as the co-driver, both already have to deal with hijackers, but they manage to escape after a long chase. On their second drive, however, Frankie and Jefferson are less fortunate: after another hijacking by hijackers, their truck runs off the road and they are captured.
