Des Hommes et des Dieux plot

"In the face of terror, their greatest weapon was faith..."

A monastery, somewhere high in the Maghreb mountains during the 1990s. Eight French monks live in harmony with their Muslim fellow villagers. They help them in their work, participate in their festivities and watch over their medical health. However, terror and violence are slowly but surely taking the upper hand in the region. Despite the mounting danger surrounding them, the monks' determination to stay grows. When they decide to treat some wounded terrorists, the authorities react furiously and pressure them to return to France.

Film about the conscience of French monks, who see their coexistence with their Muslim fellow villagers threatened by the approaching extremism and terrorism. Although the story is based on true events and the interpretations are excellent, the film didn't quite grab me. Nevertheless, it is definitely worth it, if only that the subject is still topical.

On paper, this Des Hommes et des Dieux has an interesting story, which is certainly not bad in terms of execution, but somehow I was never completely sucked into it either. The monks themselves are also well portrayed. Somewhere in faraway Algeria they try to peacefully practice their faith and live in peace with the local (Muslim) population. The actors play their part properly, in an understated way.

The fact that their lives are cruelly disrupted at a given moment also creates a different atmosphere. The quiet calm has disappeared and from that moment on, the focus is on the choice that monks have to make. Do they stay or do they leave? Their choice ultimately has major consequences, but at least it is outlined in a credible way.

But it didn't really grab me. I felt more like the spectator, watching everything from a distance. Cinema, which is sometimes beautifully filmed, sometimes slow, with quite sympathetic protagonists. I just thought it was a shame that we never got to know anything about the origin of the monastery there. That director Beauvoisleaves the question of guilt about the death of the monks at the end, I thought it was a good choice. This way the viewer can fill in what he or she thought of it at their own discretion.

The scene with the wine and the music is one of the most beautiful and immersive I've ever seen in a movie. By the way, the film is full of strong scenes. Each gathering of the fathers is beautifully portrayed and all the actors are truly astonishing.

A very strong film, too good for the mainstream.

The film ends with an idealistic message that holds hope for a better society while also showing forgiveness towards those who took the lives of others.
