I don't know what to do with this at all. Somehow I am quite positive. First, there's Emma Stone, a celestial beauty who makes the film worth watching anyway. Then there is the camera work where often nice points of view are chosen. Then there are some beautiful scenes and the script with witty lyrics, just a bit better than the average movie. The atmosphere of the town of Ojai is also beautifully shown and the ever shining California sun and the orchards full of oranges give a wonderful image (I was thinking of the music of Pavement - really, I want to travel there again). In addition, the plot is quite original.

But still, it just doesn't work. Emma Stone is beautiful but she lacks the conviction to be so cynical (Temple and Bennett in Kaboom would have done better). It's also a shame that the minor characters are all so thick. Why? Then credibility slips, which is pretty essential for a comedy. You either remain believable, or you go completely over the top, but not this half-baked stuff. And besides, it didn't bother me all that much. I watched it without really getting aroused by the film for a moment. 2.5* therefore.

Entertaining.

Basically an ordinary American high-school comedy, with the classic characters, the well-known drama and the typical setting. I usually don't like it that much, but in the form of a comedy (instead of coming of age drama) it is easier to digest.

Especially when the comedy is often quite successful. Especially Stone's family is quite hilarious. Tucci's comments are worth gold, Clarkson can also score regularly. And even Church (as a teacher) gets a few nice moments. Perhaps a bit strange that it is the adults who get the funniest roles in a high school movie, but that also makes it a bit fresher.

Furthermore, Stone does it properly, the characters around her are unfortunately of a slightly lesser level. The film is also never as sharp as in a Pretty Persuasion, for example, but it does come a long way. All in all an entertaining one and a half hour, nice that it is also easily completed within those 90 minutes.

Gluck seems quite suitable in brightening up genres/niches that I normally don't appreciate.

3.0*

Emma Stone is a hero.

Nice to see a little earlier video of her. She already showcases many of the qualities that I have come to appreciate more and more for: a beauty to behold and exceptional comedic talent, especially in timing, wit and expression.

Too bad she's stuck in a movie with a rudderless plot and lame stereotypes. The believers in particular are burned down a bit easily, but in fact the entire high school is put at the service of the plot.

I also had a hard time putting myself in the situation she got into. What are her motivations now? Well, the thick haired dude is putting her under pressure, but for that she throws her image away very easily, especially if you have to take high school culture seriously you don't expect her to crank the gossip machine (accidentally or on purpose). The film is finally killed when morality knocks on a door that has been wide open throughout the film.

Catchy in time (especially the adult supporting roles) and quite funny here and there, but had Stone not been in the main spotlight here, there would have been little to enjoy. 2*
