Little masterpiece this. The film focuses very well on the emotions that such an illness entails. There is a lot of space for rest and within this every step and every sentence gets time to properly convey its load. Especially the high realism and direct character of the film work very well. Must admit that steps are being taken here and there to give it all a bit more meaning that are not necessary and sometimes do not work, but that does not alter the fact that The Last Journey of Mr. van Leeuwen is an enormous good bit of drama. Successful movie.

Nico van Leeuwen [Mike Reus] desperately tries to save his father's [Frits Lambrechts] farm from financial ruin. When a neurologist [Paul Hoes] establishes that father suffers from a severe form of aphasia, Nico contacts his older brother Ernst [Ronald Top]. It certainly does not receive a warm welcome and in a gradually unfolding flashback we discover what is the cause of the tensions within the family. The screenplay, co-written by the experienced Paul Ruven, is certainly not bad, but Smitsman's directing of actors is too heavy on it, making the emotions much too emphatic and too easy to read from the main characters. As a result, the ending also falls completely through the basket (sic!).

I knew I had seen it before, but I didn't remember much about it. A story about the relationship between two brothers and their demented father. That relationship is very difficult, but the why only becomes clear very slowly. And that is the big flaw of the film. In the end it all comes across as too contrived and forced. I am clearly less positive than last time. Even though it's not really a bad movie. The story should have been developed a bit better.
