Nice film about a farming family and in which the young Jody takes care of a small deer. A well told story, but a bit on the long side. The film is also very good and there are quite a few sentimental moments. Beautiful nature shots including a spectacular fight between two dogs and a bear. Difficult, but in the end a 3.0 (well deserved then).

Recently I saw the film Cross Creek (1983) about the life of writer Marjorie Rawlings in Florida. That made me curious about the film adaptation of her most famous book: The Yearling. That was not easy for me. I usually don't have a problem with sentimental stories, but this movie is so gooey that the enamel of my teeth was about to jump. But it must be said: the cinematography is very beautiful. As a result, the film still scores a sufficient score with me.

The first Golden Globe for Gregory Peck, who also earned a second Oscar nomination with this role. Although the role is not as memorable as the trophy case makes it seem. It fits in with the spirit of the times, just after the war. The film was nominated a total of 8 times for an Oscar, resulting in 3 statuettes. In addition to a youth prize for the little boy Jody, the prizes were mainly for the visual part. The Yearling may be a very sweet Disney-esque family film (but from MGM), but visually it is worth seeing - especially for that time. But otherwise it is more of a teen film for teenagers from the beginning of the last century. Quite dated unfortunately, although the film occasionally has its charm. The relationship between mother and son is particularly conflicting at a time of high child mortality, which clearly characterizes a human being. Even though death was unfortunately more of a part of everyday life back then... All in all it wasn't too bad, although 2 hours of film is a bit exaggerated.
