Since I've always found the first The Crow (1994) a good film, I couldn't afford to never see this second one. Because almost everyone told me it was a bad movie it lasted until now,

13 years later, seeing him for the first time.

The first 15 minutes were rubbish, a stream of images that is barely to follow that apparently makes no sense.

Fortunately, after that, structure comes into the story and everything becomes clear.

It is an unadulterated B-Film that never reaches the level of its predecessor, but still manages to captivate the fans enough by turning it into an enjoyable violent film. The very atmospheric soundtrack is certainly worth mentioning, it is better than average and immediately stands out.

6/10.

After that annoying first quarter of an hour it turned out to be a very enjoyable Action-Violence film that kept me captivated until the very end. It all looked very greenish, but that must have been necessary to make the special effects look somewhat believable

Worth seeing, IF you're a fan of this genre

The Crow: City of Angels is a film that will certainly not be inferior to the first film in terms of ingredients. However, the story is too copied and in that sense it has no surprises. You quickly have the feeling that you have seen it all.

The Crow was a really cool movie when I was a teenager. And frankly, it still is. Just like this second part. The atmosphere, with music that alternates between choirs and buts 90 metal is strangely enough, the neo-gothic elements mixed with metal, the dystopian images of LA, clothing that is a combination of cyberpunk and sm, and all that in bright color contrasts filmed… in terms of style and atmosphere, this film is amazing.

The big downside, however, is the acting. I didn't always find The Crow itself convincing, just like some bad guys. That is partly due to the writing, full of cheap one-liners. But also the unconvincing and often overly polite way of acting of the entire cast. No dialogue feels raw, genuinely emotional. Only that tattoo parlor owner and Iggy Pop convinced me. Nice to see him in this role.

The story is unfortunately not very exciting. After the beautiful first act , we get The Crow's revenge attacks, and then it's a one-by-one countdown to the end. Funnily enough, these action moments are the downside of this dilm for me. The Crow is a menacing-looking character, but during the revenge actions he often behaves like a kind of joker, with silly jokes and all. The atmosphere changes in these scenes and the dark gothic atmosphere is completely gone. Unfortunately.
The CGI also takes me back to the late 90s. Very retro.

Still 3.5 stars, because the film is bursting with atmosphere and beautiful shots, and I'm always sensitive to that. You must like the world of The Crow, but I like to spend an evening there once in a while. Oh yeah, and bonus points for Deftones' performance. Because a good band was and still is.

3.5*
