Successful action film that doesn't start off that strong, but sets things right once on the island. The setting is strong, beautifully shot on location. In addition, the action scenes are excellent and the colorful characters, no matter how cliché, are quite entertaining. Lundgren is fine as the lead in one of his best films.

Standard action film with few surprises but well staged. A bit Expendables-esque with the group of mercenaries, and with a final battle that reminded me of Commando. At least an attempt is made to spin a story in which Nick Gunnar decides to help and protect the islanders against some capitalist exploiters. Most of the action comes in the last 20 minutes. It remains ridiculous that a war is being waged here for bat poop, but Men of War does have more of those kinds of comic moments.

The last half hour makes up for a lot, because everything before that is not good.

It takes far too long before we get any significant action. The mercenaries end up on the island and then drown themselves in endless sweet dialogues with the locals. Lundgren is also just a jerk who doesn't have the charisma to carry such a film.

It is also striking how many comedy elements there are. Sometimes successful, often not at all. The main bad guy is almost disturbingly wrong and overacted. The primitive people of a remote island speak smoother English than Dolph. It's all those kinds of things that make it all very wrong. But not in a way that can compensate for the unbridled lack of action.

And with about half an hour to go, the action finally starts and there is quite a bit to enjoy. Remarkably gory for an action film too. A nice one liner here and there (Don't Sneak up on Me, the Lundgren version of Stick Around)

So it closes well enough for a small 3.0*. But judging by the first hour, that could also have been 2.0*.
