Terra Estrangeira plot
"The best place to lose someone or to get lose from your own self"
In 1990, after thirty years of military dictatorship, the people of Brazil were finally allowed to choose their own president. But the joy at the return of democracy was short-lived: almost immediately after his election, center-right Fernando Collor announced drastic economic reforms. One of the measures was to freeze the savings of all citizens overnight. In the chaos that ensued, more than 80,000 people left their country. Terra Estrangeira follows two victims of Collor's reforms. One is Paco, a young actor who lives in Sao Paulo with his mother. When his mother hears the news about the savings, she succumbs to the television. Paco, who has always been cared for and pampered by his mother, has lost his way and accepts the offer of a shady antiques dealer to smuggle a violin and its contents to Portugal. On the run from gangsters, he meets Alex, a Brazilian immigrant, in Lisbon.
