With much rare archival footage, "When You're Strange" traces the rise and fall of The Doors, the band that, in its short existence, gave a face to an era. The documentary combines archive footage from The Doors, the Vietnam War, the Kennedy assassination and all other significant events from the period 1965-1971 with a voice-over, narrated by Doors fan Johnny Depp. The lead singer was demigod Jim Morrison, the band's charismatic frontman who died in a bathtub in Paris when he was twenty-seven.

Beautiful images from an even more beautiful film.
I've been a fan of the Doors for a long time and seeing this just shows me how good they are. The whole film naturally has a special atmosphere. The original images naturally play a major role in this. I think they have beautifully portrayed how Jim Morrison went after the abyss. What I found remarkable about this documentary is that it seemed as if Jim himself couldn't do anything about it. Like he was a little kid who wanted to try things out. As if the devil wanted him to be taken to the abyss like that. His several attempts to stop listening intently to the band members when they point it out to him again. I don't have much more to say about it, but I do know that this documentary really touched me.

Still a difference with the Oliver Stone film, this already gives a better picture of the group. And especially Jim Morrison of course. A documentary is usually only as good as the interest in the subject. But also the material and the presentation of course. And that's pretty good. No hours of interviews with band members trying to remember what happened 40 years ago. A nice compilation of video images that together form a whole. Not obvious when you're dealing with a collection of material, made by numerous (mainly) amateur filmmakers. The calm voice of Johnny Depp takes you along as a narrator, but seems subordinate to the images. At the right moments also general images of current events in the late 1960s. It frames the facts a bit. It's a fascinating documentary from a band that didn't last very long. We'll never know the real Jim Morrison, but this is close.

Atmospheric documentary, which is somewhat disappointing in content. What I find interesting about The Doors - the musicality - is only discussed superficially. Because everything revolves around Jim Morrison, who is of course interesting but also a bit tiring. I would have liked to know a little more about the other band members and their input.
By the way, I'm not that impressed anymore by those parts where songs from the band are played to the accompaniment of those typical 60s images (Martin Luther King, Kennedy's). It's starting to feel like a rock documentary.
