After several years working under the yoke of grandmaster Dario Argento, Michelle Soavi was given the opportunity to make his own film thanks to the success of La Setta (which gave him some freedom for the first time). That film became the cult horror-comedy Dellamorte Dellamore.

In a cemetery in an Italian hamlet, the dead return to life after a few days. Gravedigger Francesco is tasked with burying them back in the ground. Then a beautiful woman comes to the cemetery and falls in love; unfortunately, her husband comes back to life...

The influences of Peter Jackson's Braindead are clearly present. Although the film does have a very different kind of dry humor than that film. Story-wise, the film was rather thin, with no real common thread. It did, however, have some pretty funny moments, especially the zombies and Francesco's assistant, who provide plenty of laughs.

The film is beautifully and atmospherically shot, and the special effects looked great. While it may be from 1994, it has a typical 80s feel.

All in all, an entertaining film by Soavi, and I can easily see it becoming a cult classic. However, with all the positive reviews, I might have had my expectations a little too high.

It's absolutely in a trashy mood... after Swamp Thing (1982) and Lifeforce (1985), now it's the turn of this very peculiar film that also gave me the feeling of an '80s movie. I'm actually wondering what I've just seen. There's no clear storyline; the director focuses more on alternating comical horror moments. The horror isn't really present because it's all presented very lightheartedly with a touch of black humor. You see plenty of gory scenes, but because of the approach, the slapstick element dominates over the horror. This means there's absolutely no tension to be experienced. The location has a dark, appropriate atmosphere, which you'd expect from a cemetery. The first part of the story is stronger than the second because there's still some storyline, but that gradually changes, leaving you as a viewer completely lost. It's the moment the protagonist starts shooting not only the dead but also the living. But is that really the case, or is it all in his head? Then you get into the psychological aspect of the film, which I can't explain. This aspect becomes completely clear towards the end, when Francesco Dellamorte and his assistant Gnaghi want to escape from their world and come to a very strange conclusion. Beautiful final shot, by the way. The acting is solid. Rupert Everett and especially François Hadji-Lazaro give a good performance. The femme fatale here is the beautiful, busty Anna Falchi. You really have to love this kind of work, and I understand why this film has a cult following, but I expected more. Given the positive elements, I consider this film slightly above average. 7/10

Quite a unique zombie film, one I wasn't expecting in terms of tone and plot. Zombies and humor are often a difficult combination, often over the top, but here the humor is more subtle and situation-specific. No Zombieland (2009) then. The plot is also different from what I expected: no apocalyptic doomsday scenarios. The zombies continue to peacefully roam the cemetery, and everyone accepts that, not least gravedigger Francesco. As if they're simply part of the group.

I was also struck by the beautiful visuals. Soavi went to great lengths to expand the editing and camera angles, sometimes inappropriately, but also with some beautifully original shots from above or below, or from a particularly inventive vantage point. I also liked the film's atmosphere, especially at night with its numerous banks of fog and towering gravestones in the moonlight.

The acting wasn't great, and neither was the rest of the plot. Not even Anna Falchi, a very beautiful woman who reminded me a bit of Denise Richards. Building on the comments above, I was rather put off by her breasts. But she was a plus for the film. The lovemaking scene in the cemetery was visually appealing. It was quite nice to have seen this Dellamorte Dellamore!
