Simple gangster movie and that's nice for a change. Willie Parker (Terence Stamp) has run away to Spain after playing as a crown witness. At one point he is kidnapped by John Hurt and Tim Roth and he actually undergoes that quite relaxed and sober. It all gets even more complicated for the kidnappers when they also take a young lady with them on their road trip through Spain. Roles are well cast and the dialogues are nice to follow and at the end it has some nice twists. Not much wrong with this movie!

Tim Roth's milkmouth. Laughing when he first appears on screen and that is also about the moment the film starts. A bit stiff from the start, but once in the car a quirky ride unfolds. Spain is occasionally nicely depicted and with Stamp's nonchalant attitude it still has a trump card. Not only the two kidnappers who wonder what the man is thinking.

Great how Willie plays them, consciously or not. Puts the interaction between the four in a completely unique light. Nice overhead shot at the gas station and Frears proves himself as a refined storyteller when he slowly pushes Hurt's character forward. A film that makes something of its characters and thus reaches much further than just a crime story. Fascinating with a strong cast.

Revisited after forty years or so. This crime film is slow, especially towards the dragging ending, but apart from that still fine. The first-class cast makes something beautiful of it and director Stephen Frears constantly comes up with cool shots. The camera work is very atmospheric anyway. The plot is on the meager side and the pace could definitely have been a bit higher, but within the genre this is definitely above average.
