And then there were officially four of them...

A fast-paced adventure film with almost the same dazzling all-star cast as the recently released "The Three Musketeers" and equally clever in terms of costuming, camerawork, and structure.

Action with numerous fight scenes, often with a humorous touch, which was quite enjoyable. A remarkably successful, spectacular duel in the final scene.

The cast alone makes this film worth seeing again.

Good old-fashioned quality, with all the effects and mass scenes still done on set, not machined. It all looks much more authentic. Fortunately, the director, along with the actors, injects a generous dose of flair and humor, preventing it from becoming too heavy and dull. That doesn't prevent the film from losing some of its suspense eventually, and it's certainly not perfect. Therefore, a (strict) 3.

Sunday night's classics night brought this one, The Four Musketeers, although it took me a while to realize it was Four instead of Three, but that's beside the point. I do remember seeing Michael York in a similar role once, but that was probably Three.

But fine, the four musketeers are once again on the loose, a lady in danger, and what a lady she is, and with Richelieu and Rochefort once again on the ropes, assisted by Milady and an passant, we're also faced with some kind of siege. But whatever happens, humor is central, as we see in Constance's kidnapping and the attempts to free her, as well as the battle against the rebels, where people attack each other with bread and the champagne proves rather disappointing in the midst of the fighting.

Is it very good? No, not really, but it is entertaining, with the decent cast displaying enough charm to make it work within the bounds of entertaining. Besides that, it's grandly conceived, especially with the overview of the camp and the fort or castle in the distance. Oliver Reed only has to be himself as the heavy drinker, while Athos enjoys a drink, and Nicole Calfan is certainly a good presence as Maid Kitty. The final verdict is that The Four Musketeers is more than decent entertainment without being good.
