"Between land and sea there is a place where myths are real."
10-year-old Fiona is sent to her grandparents in the small fishing village of Dongal. She soon becomes acquainted with the local legend that one of her ancestors married a selkie, a seal that can transform into a human being. Years ago, her younger brother was carried away by the currents of the sea and everyone thought the seal had raised him. When Fiona thinks she sees her brother one day, she decides to start an investigation into the mystery.

The Irish legends and the bond between the Irishman and the sea come to life in this fairy tale, which is filmed soberly and without special effects, but still exudes a remarkably magical atmosphere. The stories about the mythical Selkie and his brother Jamie, who was kidnapped by the seals, also contribute to this and will undoubtedly appeal to the imagination of a younger audience. The beauty also lies in Sayles' great storytelling talent. An example: after her husband tells the legend of Sean Michael to his granddaughter, grandma Tess dismisses the story as superstition. At the end, when Fiona tells everyone that she has seen Jamie, Tess is the first to pack her bags and go to Roan Inish. This is what always makes a Sayles film so worthwhile. Incredibly successful and an ending that feels magical and heartwarming at the same time.

Wow, this is a fantastically beautiful film. The characters, the story and the landscape it all fits. Nice feel good movie with some nice legends and a touch of fantasy. That this can not be found here, I think is a shame.

Good film in which a girl is sent by her father to her grandparents in a small fishing village. A beautiful family drama about Irish myths and legends. Beautiful pictures of the Irish coast and quite atmospherically portrayed here and there with a perfectly fitting soundtrack.
