Carts of Darkness plot
"It feels like freedom"
Welcome to the wealthy residential neighborhoods in the hills of North Vancouver, home not only to anyone with a bit of money, but also, oddly enough, to a number of homeless people who have turned their profession into a hobby. After their daily round of collecting cans and bottles, they tear down the steep slopes for fun with their shopping carts at 70 kilometers per hour. Murray Siple tells the story of a number of homeless people who are addicted to this quite dangerous 'discipline'. But at the same time, he also penetrates their world, which is less stereotypical than he is usually portrayed in the media. There is Big Al, the 'fearless shopping cart racer', but also Bob, who collects just enough cans and bottles to maintain his caravan and flower garden and do art.
