Greenberg plot

"He's got a lot on his mind."

Roger Greenberg (Ben Stiller) is single, 40 years old, New Yorker and not sure what to do with his life. He decides to look after his successful brother's house in Los Angeles and, above all, to do nothing for a while. His main activities consist of writing letters of complaint and building a dog house. Meanwhile, he goes in search of his roots and visits his school friends. The disappointment is great when it turns out that they have grown apart. Then he gets to know Florence, his brother's assistant. A start of something beautiful.

GreenBerg is about Roger Greenberg: a neurotic guy who looks after his brother's house for a while, reminisces and reconnects with his brother's housekeeper/assistant. That can be fun: a silly guy who does his own thing in a different environment and irritates people but ultimately wins their hearts. Which can.

However, Roger Greenberg is a nasty jerk who says nasty things, makes nasty choices and acts nasty to other nasty characters. Florence, his love interest, is also annoying and has a screw loose, but not as many screws as Roger Greenberg himself. Then there's that British friend, also a rather annoying character, who just takes the hassle of Roger because he and his wife are separated.

The worst part is that almost nothing happens in the film. Greenberg himself expresses this as "I'm trying to do nothing right now..." and that is unintentionally metaphorical for the entire film: nothing happens. And what happens is annoying to watch. Annoying and very boring.

The only reason not to give this film 0.5 stars is that both Florence and Roger are well played by Stiller and Gerwig, but that can't hide the fact that this is a boring, boring film that really isn't about anything at all. The ending is all about crying.

The worst movie I've seen in years.

This was on TV a while ago and now it's picked up. I didn't really know what to expect, but I thought it was going to be a comedy (because of Ben Stiller), but this was more like a drama. It certainly wasn't a bad movie, but it was kind of special. Perhaps the film could have been a little shorter.

The cast certainly didn't do a bad job and came across convincingly. The music was also a nice addition.

All in all, well worth seeing.

This one suited me very much. I found it very entertaining, I do like a special character like Greenberg and the story appealed to me. I wasn't bored with it. Well played and sometimes funny, sometimes touching. More than enough. 4*
