England, late nineteenth century. A northern English village is inhabited by mistrustful and superstitious people. In this village, for many years, the brilliant scientist Dr. Horace Adderson successfully inoculates his mentally ill wife Martha by inoculating her with snake venom. When Martha dies while giving birth to their daughter Atheris, a local witch tells them that the newborn child means pure evil and that she must be destroyed.
