Enemies of the People plot

"Enemies of the People" looks over the shoulder of 'the project' of Thet Sambath, whose parents, like about 2 million other Cambodians, were killed under the Khmer Rouge regime in the late 1970s. In an effort to gain their trust so that they will testify to their actions on camera, Sambath now spends more time and money on the then killers than on his wife and children. We see how Sambath approaches perpetrators and confronts them with their past; one of them demonstrates how he cut people's throats. The makers let the horrific stories speak for themselves, in contrast to the propaganda newsreels of the time full of cheerfully singing farm workers. In its build-up, the film gradually reveals the magnitude and importance of Sambath's madness. The biggest fish in Sambath's net turns out to be 'Brother Number 2' Nuon Chea, Pol Pot's right-hand man.
