Lourdes plot

Christine, 32, has been in a wheelchair for most of her life. To get out of her isolation, although she is not particularly pious, she makes a pilgrimage to Lourdes. Like so many chronically ill and disabled people, she goes on a pilgrimage, but when Christine seems to have been miraculously healed one morning, envy arises in the group.

An excellent overview of what happened in the French pilgrimage site of Lourdes: the suffering, the faith, the hope, but also the skepticism, the mutual jealousy or hypocrisy, the commercialization, the development into a tourist destination...

The filmmaker brings it all to light without taking a real stand.

By the way, she was praised for this film in Venice.

Sylvie Testud (a kind of French and younger Sissy Spacek, I think) is brimming with talent, and Léa Seydoux, who also excelled in "La Vie d'Adèle", the Palme d'Or at Cannes 2013, is convincing as a young nurse, eager for an adventure even more than her job.

Mixed feelings about this. The documentary-like style works very well on the one hand, but it also has a certain modesty. Such a distant perspective sees a lot, but also remains somewhat safely outside. Let's just say that the wonder that 'film' can achieve in this way isn't likely to materialize anytime soon.

Nevertheless, Hausner's approach does manage to evoke emotions, ranging from compassion to joy (I found myself laughing out loud several times) and amazement. The question then arises as to how much of this is due to Hausner herself, or to the remarkable phenomenon that is Lourdes (or rather, Roman Catholicism) in itself.

Testud excels here in her equanimous resignation, and it's never hard to find that red hat in the more crowded scenes. The ending is also beautiful, when the "miracle that happens between people" she hopes for seems to fail to materialize, and she settles back into her wheelchair...

By the way, could that card-playing reverend be a nod to Bunuel?

A good film about a woman in a wheelchair who goes on a pilgrimage to Lourdes with a group of people. It might not seem like much is happening, but everything is handled quite subtly (although the sarcasm drips here and there). Stylistically and unadornedly shot.
