Marthe plot
The fall of 1915. Like many others wounded in the war, Simon is repatriated to a remote hospital on a peninsula of Brittany. He falls in love with the young teacher Marthe and associates himself with the drama of other broken men, such as Henry, who lost a leg and would give the other to be loved by a woman, or Mouloud, desperately searching for his betrothed's photo , which was stolen by one of his companions. The latter becomes the object of racist bullying and commits suicide. Marthe accepts Simon's advances, but refuses to marry. She doesn't want to be a widow at the age of twenty.
