Nice horror film for children. In line with Troll and House. It brings out the little boy in me again. It's really cool that this was apparently marketed to children (in one of the extras one of the makers specifically states that this is a kind of children's film), despite the gore. It's not Evil Dead or anything, but I still don't see anyone getting their eye poked out with a Barbie doll in a children's film or having dad's head melted. I get the idea that horror is now aimed at older teenagers or adults and not the younger age that is addressed here. Too bad because I really like the childish adventure in this film: finding a hole in the garden with your buddy and going out to explore together without any love interests or other sexy aspects, just going out to explore when mom and dad are away, a bit of mischief thrown in... The effects are cool too: especially the minions, who I think move remarkably smoothly for stop motion. The only downside to the film is that at one point there is a lot of shouting and you mainly listen to bombastic music and screaming children.

Silly children's horror... As an adult this is of little use to you.
A typical example of a "first" horror that parents show their 12 or 13 year old children. That was also the case with me at the time. After all these years, not much of this movie has stuck with me and that is completely normal. The first hour is a lot of teenage nonsense with some teasing, demonic facts from a metal album, woofie dies etc. Not much happens. The real action is in the last ten minutes. The FX is not of a high level.. modeling clay figures and stop motion, you know... With a very young Stephen Dorff in the lead role...

This one was also in the horror cabinet of the local video store, but there was always a more bloody cover. A hole in the garden where monsters come out and then with kids in the lead role. That could be a bit too childish. But well, I have already seen everything that was ever in that video store, but still not this one. And then it happened anyway. Indeed, at 16 I would have found this a bit too little. But nice 80's atmosphere, cool FX, still quite spicy too. Stephen Dorff is a bit of a wimp, but Christa Denton and Louis Tripp do a nice job. Story has a bit of an annoying stop/start sequence and you also have to wait about 40 minutes for the first action. Still a charming 12+ movie with 16+ scenes.
