It took a while before I really got into the film, but after a while I got used to the slow pace and certainly also to actress Samira Maas. Because she puts in an excellent acting performance, which is also necessary because she is in every scene. Much remains undiscussed, but the face of Maas often speaks volumes. Difficult childhood, growing up in a home, criminal activities, a desire to get to know your mother, etc. It's been done before, but Joy feels authentic and genuine.

This film made more of an impression on me the first time I saw it years ago. I sometimes thought about it and I was happy when I saw it on the NPO app. It's not a movie where I discovered new things now that I saw it again. These kind of stories are my thing and I like the movie house style. It is a small film that is shot quite raw. I think it's a moving and realistic story, and I think the acting is excellent. They empathize well with their role and I could empathize with Joy (Samira Maas). A sufficient. 3.5*

Joy [Samira Maas] grew up in foster care and wants to know who her biological mother is after her 18th birthday. But her intention to connect with the woman who abandoned her at the time doesn't provide the emotional stability or clarity Joy hopes for. It puts her relationship with her boyfriend [Dragan Bakema] in a new light. Meanwhile, Joy tries to help her heavily pregnant friend [Coosje Smid] because his friend [Dalorim Wartes] seems to be avoiding his responsibility. Grim portrait of a damaged young woman desperately searching for a clue to her own future. Despite the cautiously hopeful denouement, this is a depressing social drama that is based on a strong performance by Maas and Smid. Nominated in seven categories for a Golden Calf and winner in the categories “Best Feature Film”, “Best Screenplay” and Best Supporting Actress (Smid).
