Just Off Broadway plot

"That slick sleuth...Mike Shayne...is at it again"

Private detective Michael Shayne sits on the jury trying to decide whether Lillian Hubbard is responsible for Harley Forsythe's murder. A witness with information that can exonerate Lillian is killed with a knife hurled from the courtroom. Shyane manages to confiscate this knife in the ensuing confusion. That evening he slips out of the jury room and with the assistance of journalist Judy Taylor he manages to link the knife to a professional knife thrower, namely Count Edmond Telmachio. Shayne, however, finds the count murdered in a warehouse and a brooch on the dead body turns nightclub singer Rita Darling and the nightclub owner George Dolphin into two new suspects. Rita was Forsythe's betrothed and Dolphin is in love with her.
