Nothing more than a slightly different adaptation of "Apocalypse Now," also set in a different time period and considerably shorter. This film absolutely can't match the quality of "Apocalypse Now." That doesn't mean it's bad; on the contrary, it was quite captivating and quite well-made (visually as well). It's not innovative, of course, because if you've seen "Apocalypse Now," you more or less know where this one is going. The cast, however, did a decent job, especially Tim Roth. I happened to see this film on TV on TCM while zapping around

The horror! The horror!

It's brave to make this film, and especially to do so in this TV-movie format with its inherent limitations. Considering that, Roeg has truly delivered a masterpiece.

Yes, in direct comparison with Apocalypse Now, this one is a bit disappointing, but of course, that's not a very fair comparison. What they've done brilliantly is create a particularly alienating atmosphere, with some truly beautiful work on the soundtrack. And also, very, very nice how convincing the design is down to the last detail.

Strong performances by Roth and De Bankolé, though it's a shame that Malkovich is a bit disappointing—not so much that he's not good, but that he could be so much better. And that could have really made the film, while it now falters somewhat on its strong atmosphere.

By the way, I just happened to see that an animation of the same book is in development. Maybe I should give it a read.
